About this Course

Level 1 focuses on basic English grammar skills for beginning English learners. Topics covered include parts of speech and asking and answering questions. Level 3 focuses on basic English grammar skills for beginning English learners. Topics covered include parts of speech and past tense including applications for asking and answering questions.

Level 1 Course Objectives

  • 1.G.1 Identify basic parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs of frequency, and pronouns).
  • 1.G.2 Produce simple sentences with simple present verbs.
  • 1.G.3 Describe objects and activities using prepositions of place and time in simple sentences.
  • 1.G.4. Identify present progressive verbs in simple sentences.


Level 1 Integrated Objectives

  • 1.LS.1 Produce answers to simple yes/no and information questions.
  • 1.LS.2 Identify sequence and the main ideas in oral statements.
  • 1.LS.3 Deliver simple sentences about personal preferences and/or routines.
  • 1.RW.1 Identify logical order of events in a series of sentences.
  • 1.RW.2 Identify details in simple reading passages.
  • 1.RW.3 Produce simple sentences with capital letters, periods, correct spacing, and proper word order.
  • 1.RW.4 Produce answers to questions about short texts. 


Level 3 Course Objectives

  • 3.G.1 Produce affirmative and negative simple statements and questions with simple past verbs.
  • 3.G.2 Produce past time clauses in sentences (before, after, as soon as, while, and when).
  • 3.G.3 Produce affirmative and negative simple sentences and questions with past progressive verbs.
  • 3.G.4 Produce simple sentences and respond to questions with can, could, be able to, and know how to.
  • 3.G.5 Produce compound sentences using coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, and so).


Level 3 Integrated Objectives

  • 3.LS.1 Identify and verbally produce statements of fact and opinion.
  • 3.LS.2 Take notes from a variety of sources using various graphic organizers.
  • 3.LS.3 Deliver a planned presentation on class topics.
  • 3.LS.4 Deliver an impromptu presentation on class topics.
  • 3.RW.1 Produce writing plans using graphic organizers.
  • 3.RW.2 Identify facts and opinions within a paragraph.
  • 3.RW.3 Identify main ideas and distinguish from supporting details in short passages.
  • 3.RW.4 Produce descriptive and opinion paragraphs that include topic sentences, detailed supporting sentences, effective transitions, concluding sentences, and proper punctuation and capitalization. 



Homework

Students will receive regular homework assignments to reinforce skills learned in class. Students must complete homework on or before the date it is due. Homework is included in the final course grade.


Make-up Work

It is the student’s responsibility to arrange with each instructor to make up work he/she might have missed. It may be necessary for the student to receive tutoring for additional help from an instructor with make-up work. Level Advancement

To pass a level, students must achieve a 2.0 GPA or greater and meet the requirements of the attendance policy. Failure to do so will result in the student repeating the level.
